Happy New Year! Nostalgia Manila Welcomes 2008!

Wow, 2007 sure went by quickly don't you think?! I've received a lot of emails from people saying that 2007 was a bit tough on them. We've all had our ups and downs this last year, but I have a BIG FEELING that 2008 will be different. In fact I have a sneaking suspicion that it's going to be absolutely fantastic!

The Chinese have always beleived the number 8 to be a very lucky number. For one, it's the only number that ends in an up stroke when you write it down on paper. It also stands for infinity. Infinite prosperity is what most people wish for, but everyone must always remember to count their blessings. Be happy with what you have, and work hard to attain what you desire.

Here's wishing you a Happy New Year! I know it's going to be a great one, filled with joy, love, and blessings!

Sine Nostalgia: Bakit May Pag-ibig Pa 1979

Nostalgia Manila in cooperation with Sari-Saring Sineng Pinoy proudly presents, Sine Nostalgia! Featuring movie critiques and reviews of the most memorable Filipino movies of the 70's and 80's by the top authority in reviewing nostalgic films, Jojo Devera. Learn about that films that shaped Filipino Pop Culture, and the movies that left their mark in Philippine cinema history.

Mork & Mindy TV Show Opening Video

A companion to Cartoon TV Rama, TV Times Television Greats features the best tv programs that span three decades. Watch opening sequences and famous scenes from your favorite '60s, '70s, and '80s tv shows!

Mork & Mindy (1978)

The series was a spinoff of the sitcom Happy Days. The character of Mork first appeared in the season 5 episode, "My Favorite Orkan," where he threatened to take Richie Cunningham back to Ork as an example of a human, but his plan is foiled by Fonzie. The character proved to be popular enough with the audience to rate a starring role in a series, though in the series Mork would reside near Boulder, Colorado, and in the (then) current day of 1978 as opposed to Happy Days' 1950s Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

After discovering Mork, Mindy promises to keep his true identity a secret and allows him to move into her attic. Complicating factors include Mindy's father, Fred (Conrad Janis), who expresses outrage that his daughter is living with a man. Fred's mother-in-law, Cora (Elizabeth Kerr), presents a much less conservative view, and approves of Mork and the living arrangement. Mindy and Cora also worked at Fred's record store with Cora giving music lessons to an African-American teenager, Eugene (Jeffrey Jacquet). Storylines usually centered on Mork's attempts to understand human behavior and American culture as Mindy helps him to adjust to life on Earth. At the end of each episode, Mork must report back to Orson (voice of Ralph James), his Orkan supervisor, on what he has learned about Earth. These end-of-show summaries allow Mork to comment humorously on social norms.

Mork's greeting was "Na-Nu Na-Nu" (sounds like Nah-New Nah-New) along with a hand gesture similar to Mr. Spock's Vulcan salute from Star Trek. It became a popular catchphrase at the time.

This series was Robin Williams' first major acting break. It became famous for Williams' use of his manic improvisational comedic talent. Williams would make up so many jokes during filming, the scripts eventually had specific gaps where Williams was allowed to perform freely. In many scenes, Pam Dawber had to bite her lip to avoid laughing and ruining the filming.

Waking up to the sound of "Jump"!

Why is it that I keep waking up to strange music? I woke up this morning and as I was slowly opening my eyes I heard the intro to Van Halen's "Jump"! Someone upstairs in the living room was playing it. What made it funny was that my every move, getting out of bed, was perfectly going along with the music. As if I had rehearsed the moves and this was all choreographed. I had to laugh and went along with it. What made it even funnier was that when I got on my feet, came in the first line to the first verse "I get up!" LOL.

Here are super rare group shots of the early 70's super group Cinderella! These amazing photos were never published, and here they are shown for the first time in more than three decades. Cinderella spawned big hits like "T.L. Ako Sa Iyo", "Our Wonderland Of Dreams", and "Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy", mostly composed by now legendary songwriter and producer Snaffu Rigor, also famous for composing "Bulag, Pipi, At Binggi", which launched Freddie Aguilar's career.

Some of the group's members went on to form other music groups. Bob Guzman later became one of the Boyfriends. Yolly Samson had a fruitful solo career, while Celso Llarina and Spanky Rigor (not present in these photos) later became part of legendary disco kings VST & Company. Both Celso and Spanky were already full time producers when they made the jump, and are also responsible for producing VST & Company's unmistakable unique sound.

Rain, rain, go away, come again another day

I'm here at my desk posting today's features and I can hear it raining outside. It's been raining since I woke up this morning, and it's been raining for several hours now! I don't mind the rain so much when you're indoors, I actually find it relaxing. But it's a hassle when it's raining and it's super cold! I hate running errands on days like this. It's really best to stay indoors no? I don't think I'll ever get used to the cold. So I think it would be a good idea to spend next Christmas in Hawaii!

So how was everyone's Christmas? I had a blast! I must say that this year's Christmas was the best one in the last ten years. I'm wondering if hanging out by the bar had something to do with it... hmmmmm. But seriously, I had a wonderful time being with family and everyone got cool presents. Yes, Santa was real nice to me this year, and gave me something super special. What did you get from Santa? I would love to know what you got!
