Shawn's Comments: In this week's edition of Peel Here I'm going to take a look at some stickers that truly aren't stickers, even though they're called stickers. They're really stamps masquerading as stickers, which isn't all that far off, but for kids with chronic sandpaper tongue, well it just can't be as fun. So what is this outcast of the glue on paper clique that wants so badly to be part of the sticker-y fun-ness? Why it's the Go-Bots Sticker Fun Book brought to you by the same company that printed most of the coloring and activities books for the last few decades, Golden Books.

Shawn's Comments: These stickers are from a Jem sticker book set produced by Diamond (which was an American version of the Panini company.) Basically you’d buy packs of stickers to try and complete stories in a sticker book. If you are unfamiliar with the cartoon, it was about a young girl, Jerrica Benton, who inherited her father's music empire Starlight Music (as well as a prototype entertainment synthesizer machine known as Synergy) and is trying to fund a house for foster children, the Starlight House. Her main nemesis is a man named Eric Raymond who ran Starlight Music before Jerrica took control, and the Misfits (not to be confused with the punk-hardcore band led by Glen Danzig in the late 70's early 80's), an evil all girl glam punk band that answers to Raymond's every beck and call.

Jerrica, through the power of the awesome magic synthesizer Synergy, can transform into Jem, who is outrageous, truly truly outrageous, and the worlds most popular singer. Backed by an all girl band of her friends, the Holograms, Jem fights the good fight of fashion sense, foster children and corrupt record execs, not to mention keeping the love of Rio (her purple haired hunk boyfriend), and keeping her duel personalities secret from the world.

Shawn's Comments: Scratch and Sniff stickers. Whether you know them as sniff, sniffy, stinky, smelly, scratch 'n' sniff, scratch & sniff, scent, or scented these stickers were undeniably a part of most kids lives in the 70's and 80's. Practically every company producing stickers had a line or two, and there were ever a few companies who dealt almost exclusively in the form, Trend, CTP, and Mello Smello off the top of my head. There were licensed stickers like Mr. T, Kool-Aid, E.T., and Garfield, as well as generic or company specific images, of which Trend is probably the popular and prolific. There were even puffy scratch & sniff stickers which was like a 1980 girl's wet dream come true.

The popularity of these stickers was so pervasive that the idea spread to many other products other than stickers. There were many toys including, two scented Masters of the Universe figures, Stinkor and Moss Man, both of which rounded out my sense memories for that toy line, not to mention a whole line of Strawberry Shortcake figures. There was even a series of scratch and sniff children's books (I had a Popeye one that I've been trying to find for years to no avail), scented crayons, pens, pencils and erasers.

For today's vintage sticker collectors Scratch & Sniff's are probably some of the most rare, not to mention expensive, stickers because of they're very self-destructive form. Not only is it a sticker, which means that at least half of all those made were used as just that, but in order to get to the sweet scent you had to (obviously) scratch the sticker which left most of them, after time, faded, ripped or scentless.

Shawn's Comments: Stickers magazine was a short-lived publication that had only around 16 issues published over a four-year period from 1984-88. The magazine began as a celebration of all things sticker related, from articles on certain types of stickers (scratch and sniff, glitter, foil, etc.) to updates on sticker companies, classified ads for sticker trading pen pals, and even tips on how to throw the perfect sticker slumber party. After the first few issues though the publishers realized that there just wasn’t enough material to warrant an entire magazine so they soon began to add filler articles covering more or less the interests of the young 80s girl, from stories about unicorns and gymnastics, to feature interviews with stars like Soiel Moon Frye (Punky Brewster).

Nostalgia Note: *This was a magazine that you used to be able to buy at Regina's gift shop in Shoppesville (Greenhills), and at the old Quad in Makati.*

Shawn's Comments: In 1983 Donruss and General Mills teamed up to produce a set of 66 Super Hero parody sticker cards, which were probably influenced by Topp's long running Wacky Packages (product parody) stickers. Though not as prolific as other companies like Fleer and Topps, Donruss did manage to issue a few sticker oriented card sets in the late 70s and early 80s. Each character had a complete bio on the back of the sticker card that included their origin and list of ememies.

Peel Here! Shawn's Sticker Collection #04: 21 Jump Street Sticker Cards

Shawn's Comments: These are from the set of Topps 21 Jump Street Sticker cards released in 1987. There were 44 stickers in the set, most of which featured everybody's favorite Pirate Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) who was a huge star after he was cast as Officer Tom Hanson on this show.

In true Topps fashion there were two separate types of card-backs, ones with trivia and ones with puzzle pieces. Below is an example of both, as well as the "What your completed puzzle will look like" card back.

It took 24 cards to complete the puzzle, so it was actually pretty big. I'm not all that familiar with Topps sticker card puzzles, but from what I've seen in the Garbage Pail Kids sets there are usually only 9 cards needed to complete the puzzle. I was never quite sure what you were supposed to do with the completed puzzle though. I guess you could tape them to a piece of poster board or something.

Just for the hell of it here's some pointless 21 Jump Street Trivia:

-Holly Robinson who play Officer Judy Hoffs actually sang the theme song to the show with Johnny Depp and Peter DeLuise on back-up vocals (they shouted "Jump")

-Jump Street was one of Fox's first big hits and it lead off the Sunday night line-up, a spot that the Simpson's took over and has held ever since.

-Richard Grieco (Officer Dennis Booker) was actually as popular if not more than Johnny Depp on the series, even garnering a spin-off series that lasted for one season. Currently Richard Grieco isn't buying any islands, so I think Johnny Depp has beat him in the popularity polls of late.

Shawn's Comments: These were 7-Eleven Slurpee premiums that were hidden in false bottoms of the frozen drink cups in 1985. For a period of time I wasn't sure if I imagined these or what because I couldn't find them anywhere. Anyway, around the same time there were also baseball and football player versions as well, but it's the rock ones that I remember the most. I really remember wanting very badly to get a Rick Springfield so that I could give it to my sister (she was pretty big into him at the time) but all I could get were lousy Billy Squier and Dio coins. A few months ago, when I was trying to pick the image of the coins out of my memory I could have sworn that the Dio coin changed between images of him standing calmly and of one where he was throwing the two fingered goat (devil horns hand gesture), but alas as the coin shows there were no devil horns to be found. What a wasted opportunity on the 7-Eleven premium department.

Anyway, I was so glad to finally find these and to know that I wasn't crazy and that these did in fact exist. Not only that, but they are freaking stickers to boot! I've got the entire set, and sadly there is no Rick Springfield to be found, but there is a pretty sweet Huey Lewis and the News one as well as a pretty nifty Ozzy Osbourne one.

Shawn's Comments: This set of stickers are a variation on Puffy stickers, but with an awesome lenticular printing flare. What is lenticular printing you ask? Well there is a great entry on it in the Wikipedia here. Basically it's when two images are broken up into vertical laths and are arranged at different angles, so that when you look at them from different angles they appear to be one image or the other (and sometimes a mixture of both.) In the 1600's painters were using this process, cutting up their paintings and arranging them to fake a 3-D effect with the images.

Nowadays we print these type of images on prisms so moving the prism makes the image appear to change or move. This was freaking huge in the 80's, especially with kid's novelty sneakers that had cartoon characters on them, so when a kid was walking the image would flicker and change. It was also used in printing stickers, most prominently in one particular line, the Transformers, for what I would hope would be obvious reasons. I'm not sure exactly what these types of stickers were called because until I did some research I had never heard of 'Lenticular' before. I think we called them flicker stickers, though I've now seen 'switchable', 'changeable', and 'prism stickers' on different sites and packages.

These stickers come from a Transformers sticker book set from 1984. Apparently you purchased it separate from the stickers then you'd try and collect 4 different sticker sets to complete the book. I picked this set of stickers up on Ebay because it had a Sideswipe sticker, and he was always my favorite Transformer (I mean he's a freaking toy, a robot, and a Lamborghini, that's like the king of 80's boy triumvirates.)

Shawn's Comments: These stickers, which were inserted into the Antioch Press story book for the first Ghostbusters film in 1984, were some of the first stickers I remember buying with my own money when I was about 7 years old. Well, at least these are a variation of what I remember buying. I believe that there were two different sets of these Ghostbusters stickers; the set I had featured speech bubbles with phrases like, "Back off man, I'm a scientist!" When I began scouring auction sites and antique stores to re-build my collection, these were the only ones I could initially find.

The layout designers did a pretty good job picking images, though I could have done without the repeated stickers in lieu of some additional images, namely some Ernie Hudson, Rick Moranis, Gozer, an Ecto-1, and some demon dogs stickers.
