Speak & Spell! Your first talking educational toy.

"Spell dog: D*o*g*... correct!" Aliw na aliw ka sa boses ng Speak & Spell na tunog robot, at minsan akala mo talagang kinakausap ka nito. At bakit nga naman hindi mo ito iisipin? Walang ibang laruan noon na ganito ka interactive. Kaya naman pala madaling isipin na ang Speak & Spell ay talagang nakikipag-laro sa iyo. Unang lumabas sa market ang Speak & Spell noong 1978, manufactured by Texas Instruments. Ang Speak & Spell ay isa sa mga kaunaunahang electronic toys na may speech technology, at mula pa sa unang labas ay ipinromote ito bilang isang educational toy.

Naging iconic itong Speak & Spell nuong ginamit ito ng lovable alien na si E.T. (sa pag-"phone home" niya sa kanyang mother ship) sa pelikulang E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial noong 1982. Ang unang model ng Speak & Spell ay may raised keys, at ang mga sumunod na models ay may flat membrane keypad. May ilang spelling at memory games ito, at maaring i-adjust ang difficulty level pag pinalitan mo ang learning module o cartridge. Nag-labas din ang Texas Instruments ng Speak & Math (asul ang kulay), at Speak & Read (dilaw ang kulay). Pero di hamak na mas popular at mabili ang original na pulang Speak & Spell.

Ito na yata ang pinaka-precious na naging laruan ko nung 7 years old ako. May Auntie ako nag-bakasyon nun na galing sa Canada kasama ang family nya. Napansin nya na palagi kong hinihiram ito sa anak nya na kasing age ko. After their 1 month vacation here in Pinas, iniwan nila ito para sa akin. I can still remember kung paano gaano kasama ang loob nung pinsan ko nang ibigay ng Tita ko yung toy sa akin (=

Ako rin, may ganitong laruan. Yung first generation na raised keypads. Nabili ko ata ito sa Singapore or Hong Kong (expat kasi nuon si Erpats at sa Indonesia kami naninirahan).

Pinagkakaguluhan yan ng lahat ng kaibigan ko pagkauwi ko ng Pilipinas. Laspag na laspag at di na lang tumagal dahil natatangal ang mga keys.
