Carla Di Santos: Pre-LRT Avenida, Philcite Robot, Ignacio Santos, Melecia Santos Photos '40s-'80s Photos

Time is frozen in a single frame of film. Every bit of detail is perfectly captured by the camera lens. These photos take us back to those wonderful days when everything seemed so fresh and new, those days we wished would last forever. Relive those special moments in your life, and share your memories with Photo Nostalgia!

Good day! My family has been an avid follower of your great website for years and my dad finally decided to share some of his old photos for everyone to see. We sincerely hope you can find the time to post these. Nostalgia Manila has made a huge impact on me ever since I stumbled upon it. I can't seem to get enough of old Manila photos. I'm now a certified Nostalgia Manila addict!

My family has been into the arts & photography business, starting from my grandpa Ignacio Santos who once worked as a society photographer for the Philippine's Herald newspaper back in the 50s-60s, and one of his in-laws Pete Coniconde who was the art director of the Philippine's Herald also. Since then the Santos clan has branched out and produced generations of photo-journalists and artists. I'm currently trying to live up to the family's name by joining our family business, shooting weddings & stuff.

I've attached here some photos that my dad took during the 70's-80's, when he was still starting with photography.

Avenida before LRT Construction (CLICK IMAGE FOR LARGER VIEW)

My dad thinks this was taken around late 70's or early 80's, when LRT was still to be constructed. Note structures eg Good Earth emporium, State Cinema, Shoe World, Madison Shoe Store, Fairmart, Weston, Joy Mart Budget Store, Avenue, et al. Sign says "Rizal Ave-Carriedo St. to J. Abad Santos closed closed to traffic due to LRT construction."

Me & my family in front of a giant robot at Philcite back in the mid-80s. (Why don't they have build stuff like this anymore?) My bro & I were originally so thrilled to see it but the summer heat was so frustrating we couldn't even bear to pose in front of it for too long. I was 5 or 6 i think.

My grandmother Melecia Santos, taken on top of Philippine's Herald building, overlooking the main Post Office, circa 1948-49.

My grandfather Ignacio Santos, with his view camera, 1940's.

Many thanks to our good friend Carla Di Santos, who was kind enough to share with us these wonderful photos.

I just turned one in the picture. I wasn't a very eager solid food eater so they usually gave me frosted flakes to munch on so i could at least get some nutrients in my body.

Park at Baguio City. Since there were no malls back then, nature land was our favorite playground. My family and I would be there every weekend. The kids in the photo are my brothers and sister- Golda, Grant and Gerry. I'm the smaller girl with the white jacket.

Again my brothers and sister- Glenn, Golda and Grant. I'm the one in red. All three of them had a piano recital at the St. Louis auditorium in Baguio.

Many thanks to our good friend Grace Varona, who was kind enough to share with us these wonderful photos.

Here are super rare group shots of the early 70's super group Cinderella! These amazing photos were never published, and here they are shown for the first time in more than three decades. Cinderella spawned big hits like "T.L. Ako Sa Iyo", "Our Wonderland Of Dreams", and "Ang Boyfriend Kong Baduy", mostly composed by now legendary songwriter and producer Snaffu Rigor, also famous for composing "Bulag, Pipi, At Binggi", which launched Freddie Aguilar's career.

Some of the group's members went on to form other music groups. Bob Guzman later became one of the Boyfriends. Yolly Samson had a fruitful solo career, while Celso Llarina and Spanky Rigor (not present in these photos) later became part of legendary disco kings VST & Company. Both Celso and Spanky were already full time producers when they made the jump, and are also responsible for producing VST & Company's unmistakable unique sound.

This was your typical "hanging-out with the barkada" shot of the 70's. It was quite common for guys to be posing with a friend who owned a motorbike. The colors of a late afternoon setting sun completes this really cool 70's photo.

My family with the most popular love team in the Philippine Movies during the 80's. This photo was taken sometime in 1980 or '81 during our excursion at Matabungkay Beach Resort. I was the kiddo in the blue jumper & cap. To my left is my sister thumb-sucking. The surprised lady with a towel on the far right end is my Mom together with my Dad standing right next to her. The other women in the photo are my aunts and chums. We were astonished with the young Sharon Cuneta paired with fellow teeny bopper Gabby Concepcion, whom at that time filming their movie, "P.S. I Love You". Sharon & Gabby were the screen's most popular lover team to beat during their prime in the 80's.

That's my groovy Dad. His striking pose in this picture showed how he loved to get on the floor and shindig :)

This picture was taken during our school fair in Maryknoll and part of the Wea Twins promo tour. I believe it was either 1981 or 82 that they guested in our yearly fair together with Howi, Magnolia's Mascot. I was in nursery or kinder then and had a huge crush on the two! Makes me wonder what ever happened to the twins.

This photo was taken in front of our house when it was just newly-built. If you told our neighbors that this was how our house looked like before the trees covered the entire property, they probably wouldn't believe you. My sisters and I were trying to figure out what was going on when this picture was taken (especially none of them are in it, only me). It could be that my grandfather and cousins were checking out the house at the time and I wanted to see my grandpa's Malibu (the parked car) which he was so proud of. If you look closely at the square blocks on the front wall, you may notice that each one is a character in the ancient alibata alphabet. It's my favorite part of my house -- too bad no one can see the wall through the plants and trees anymore.
