The Makati We Once Knew

"Sa Maynila, saan sa Maynila?" a kababayan would always ask as a follow-up to the usual queries on one’s link to the mother land. "Sa Makati" and to this the usual reply, "Talaga? Wow! Ang sosyal mo naman!"

I guess those who have only visited Makati once or twice only associate the city with its popular shopping and financial districts. Many automatically think of the high-rise office buildings of Ayala Avenue or the posh malls and restaurants in the area. This is, of course, a fraction of a much larger community where I grew up in and spent almost a quarter of my lifetime.

Entering Makati: The "Salamat Po" sign was there to thank motorists passing Mandaluyong. This is a shot of Highway 54, now known as Edsa. The buildings on the left are Euroclean and the Guadalupe Shopping Center.

The Makati of my childhood in the seventies was not a city then but a municipality in Rizal. We lived in the residential area near the municipal hall on J.P. Rizal Avenue, the main road plied by jeepneys and buses from Taft to "Ilalim" or "ibabaw" (Guadalupe stops on opposite sides of EDSA), or to Ayala and Buendia. Going to Guadalupe meant you would pass by the Lola Theater (a second-rate-looking movie house) before reaching Burgos and Makati Ave.; and Rockwell Station, a power plant across the banks of the Pasig River. I heard that this site is now home to an upscale shopping center. Memorable stops also included the Loyola Funeral Homes and ABC, another movie theater popular for showing many Tagalog blockbusters.

The popular shopping destination was the Makati Commercial Center, long before there was Greenbelt and before it was renamed Ayala Center. If you wanted to watch a movie, you would go to the Rizal Theater or to the Quad. The Makati Supermart was where you would get your groceries and popular restaurants were The Plaza and Sulu. Outdoor mass and concerts were held at the Glorietta, a park like setting at the rear of the Quad and accessible to Makati Supermart and nearby Rustan's, said to be one of Madame Imelda's favorite department stores. The Manila Inter-Continental Hotel was adjacent to Shoemart on Edsa and Ayala Avenues. Having been gone for many years, I do not know which of the landmarks mentioned remain or closed shop.

As a youngster, my errands took me to the post office which was just a few blocks from the munisipyo, right next to the Rizal Superette, the neighborhood grocery. Across the road is Mercury Drug. Its storefront is one long, white counter open directly to pedestrians and customers, and a back drop of endless rows of medicine bottles. In the evening hours, motorists driving by can't help but notice its glaringly bright overhead lighting. Nearby were a Magnolia Ice Cream House and another snack house families and barkadas frequent when the weather gets very hot and you just want to be some place air-conditioned. Also within walking distance is the parish church of St. Andrew the Apostle on Reposo Street (later renamed Nicanor Garcia St.) and Pasig Line (later renamed Imelda Ave. and post People Power days Kalayaan Ave. ). One direction of Imelda Avenue borders the Makati Cemetery while the opposite direction will take you towards the I.S. or International School and Makati Avenue's restaurant row.

A very spacious Makati in 1973. There was an abundance of empty lots yet to be developed into commercial areas and new buildings.

As for our neighborhood, apart from the minor brawls of the local tambays, we felt generally secure. Our streets and sidewalks were adequately paved, some even landscaped. Bakeries, sari-sari stores and street vendors cater our morning pan de sal and taho, "pish bol" meryenda, and night cap balut. The area was definitely no Forbes Park or Dasmarinas Village, the prominent subdivisions that time. But to us bulilits, our only concern was to get our homework done in time to join the playmates outside. The gang would gather out in the street for a lively game of patintero, tubigan, habulan, moro-moro, taguan, etc. Some of the kids even started go-cart races, yo-yo matches, and skateboard exhibitions when skateboarding became trendy. We relished active, noisy play and screaming and yelling like miniature Tarzans of our urban jungle. We occasionally take a "taym awt" to give way to a car or two passing by, but for most part our street belongs to us and is our common playground. We also welcomed the occasional visits of the carabao-drawn caravan to our neighborhood. The caravan is an amusing traveling tindahan of native handicrafts and household items. Everyone stopped to marvel at the colorful parade before us. The adults said that the family aboard came from the probinsya to sell their wares. We would try to peek at the rear of the caravan to get an idea of how the people lived and slept within. But we failed to see its interiors, obstructed by hundreds of sabits of walis-tambo, salakot, banig, banko, bunot, and so much more. Merchandize and curiosities fill all sides of the cart all the way to the roof!

Seasonal downpours did not stop us from having fun. We risked pneumonia and frolicked and splashed at each other in the rain as if our street was a huge waterpark; except that the girls weren't in their bathing suits or the guys in their trunks. T-shirts and shorts were the norm to achieve our "wet look".

I look back to the Makati of yesteryears and the childhood friends I miss and realize one funny thing: Man, that was one long play date!

The Mighty Mightor (1968)

Caveman Tor was given the power to transform into the super-powered Mightor by a hermit, using a super-powered club. With his pet flying dinosaur, Tog, he protected his village from evil-doers. Amongst the villagers were the chief, Pondo, and his daughter, the beautiful redhead Sheera. Sheera had a younger brother named Little Rok, who loved pretending to be Mightor. The characters had several pets, including Little Rok's dodo bird Ork and Sheera's mammoth cub Bollo.

1981 lumabas itong big hit ng Hall And Oats na naging instant favorite ng maraming mga Pinoy. Ang Hall And Oats ay naging mas kilala sa mainstream matapos nila ilabas itong single na ito. Pinakapopular sila sa mga kolehiyala crowd, at mga ages 21 and over na nangingilangan ng ibang alternatibo at music na hindi maingay. Ang kantang ito ang naging mainstream introduction ng Hall And Oates sa karamihan ng mga Pinoy. Mula noon ay naging parte na rin ang tunog ng Hall And Oates sa panglasa ng Pinoy sa musika.

Robo Watch!

"Akin blue, pero sa iyo black!" Ang Robo Watch ay ang isa sa mga pinakamabiling pang regalo sa Pasko na nabibili sa kahit saang tiangge noong mid to late '80s. Ang pinakamahal na version ay ang original na gawa sa Japan by Takara (ang mismong toy manufacturing company na gumawa ng Generation 1 Transformers toys). Maganda ang packaging ng Takara na naka-box, mas mabigat ang plastic, at mas maraming features ang kanyang digital clock.

Pero ang pinakamabiling version ay ang mas murang bootlegs na kung saan-saan ginawa. Merong made in: China, Taiwan, Macao, Mexico, meron pang rare na model na gawa sa El Salvador. Pero kahit saan pa man ito ginawa, pare-pareho ang itsura dahil standard ang mga plastic parts, at halatang mas mababa ang quality dahil mas magaan, at mas madaling masira kung ikukumpira sa version na gawa sa Japan. Madaling lumuwag ang joints, at habang tumatagal mas mahirap i-snap-back sa kanyang strap dock. Sari-saring mga kulay ang mapapagpilian, pero sikat at mabili ang kulay itim, at medyo mahirap hanapin ang kulay navy o silver.

Ang mga letrato ng mga robo watch na nandidito, ay ang pinakamurang bootleg versions. Walang packaging, at hindi totoo ang kanyang digital watch, dahil sticker lang ang kanyang display screen. Ikaw? Anong kulay ng Robo Watch mo?

1. Where did you grow up, and what made that place special?
I spent my first 4 years in Manila until my family moved to a subdivision in Las Pinas in 1971. It was a small neighborhood of about 30 houses. Everybody knew everybody. Every Christmas and New Year's eve, all the residents would gather in the empty lot/basketball court to celebrate a special mass, hold games for the kids and adults alike, sing Christmas carols, share food pot-luck style and just spend time together while waiting for midnight. It's one childhood memory of Christmas which I hold very dear to my heart.

2. What was your favorite tv show, cartoon, or children's show growing up? What did you like about these shows that made them your favorite?
As a kid, I remember watching the Wacky Races, Gulliver, Flintstones, Sesame Street, and Electric Company. As I grew older, I still enjoyed watching the same shows plus Little House on the Prairie, Eight is Enough, Three's Company and the MTV. Back then, most tv shows were very wholesome. I wish I could say the same with what's on cable and on tv for my kids nowadays.

3. Favorite music group or artist? Most memorable song?
Up to this day, I still love listening to the 80's music - New Wave most especially. My most memorable songs (more for the melody than for the lyrics) are: Boy Who Cried Wolf (Style Council), Appetite (Prefab Sprout), Don't You (Simple Minds), More to Lose (Seona Dancing), Heaven (Bryan Adams).

4. Share with our readers one of your fondest memories of growing up.
Life was so simple back in those days. Playtime for me and my siblings usually meant running, biking, playing taguan, tumbang preso, patintero, piko, Chinese garter (for the girls), doctor quack-quack, Simon says, touch ball, etc. If the weather didn't permit, we stayed indoors to play tex, cards, jackstones, pick-up-sticks or board games.

5. What do you miss from back then that's not available today?
I miss the annual Christmas parties held on that empty lot/basketball court in our small subdivision. The parties are not going to happen anymore, the empty lot is now gone and in it's place is a big house. I also miss COD and Big Bang sa Alabang.

Commercial Break: Philippine Airlines 1987

This Phillippine Airlines tv advert was shown in Hong Kong to promote Philippine tourism and PAL. Everyone remembers PAL's official theme song for their ad campaign: Shining Through. "Philippine Airlines" is written in Cantonese at the end of the commercial.

Working Around The Clock Just For You!

Newly Added Sidebar Fun
You may have noticed that there are two new fun additions to the sidebar. Most of you bloggistas have the Recent Readers & Visitors Widget on your blogs, which displays cute little thumbnail photos of your friendly bloggista neighbors who recently visited your blog. This fun little widget is provided by MyBlogLog, where most of our bloggista friends have created profiles and joined MyBlogLog Communities. Join the Nostalgia Manila MyBlogLog Community if you have a MyBlogProfile. If you don't have one, well maybe it's time you got one!

We also have the new Nostalgic Image Surprise box. This little thing randomly displays a variety of nostalgic images every time you view a new page, or if your screen is refreshed. At the moment, there are about 50+ images in rotation. Images of nostalgic faces, places, and things; ranging from shots of popular music icons, matinee idols, old photos of places, or really cool shots of your favorite vintage toys. There are so many fun images to surprise you! There's even a cool photo of an Orange Julius napkin from the '70s! The images are displayed randomly so it may (or may not) take you hours before you see the elusive Orange Julius Napkin. Our point being? It may take you 24 hours of refreshing to see all 50+ images. But you wouldn't want to do that, so just take a look at our Nostalgic Image Surprise box every time you go to a new page. More surprise images will be added, and we may have double the amount of images by this weekend. Again, too much page refreshing is not advised! ;)

Mabangis Ang Bidyo Pulis
All our devoted fans know very well that we follow a regular weekly schedule. Nostalgia Manila pretty much posts several times during each day of the week, except for Sundays. But wait a minute! The work doesn't stop there! Nostalgia Manila does its video link updating every Sunday, to make sure all the videos in this blog are working. We mostly feature videos on weekly favorites like: Video Hit Parade Classics, Electric Company Mondays, Cartoon TV Rama, The Sesame Street Lunchbox, but we also have videos on other posts where we may have featured an old commercial, or any other fun video clip.

Since Google took over YouTube, mas naging mahirap na mag post ng mga video clips dahil tinatanggal agad ng YouTube. The lifespan of videos being up for viewing is usually very short. Kaya kinakailangan talaga enjoy them while they last. Minsan sineswerte tayo, and some of our friends upload mga videos na tinanggal. Pero this is not so for older, less popular, and more rare videos, tulad ng ating mga videos for Electric Company Mondays, Cartoon TV Rama Spot, and The Sesame Street Lunchbox. Masmadaling humanap ng replacement videos for Video Hit Parade Classics, dahil mas marami ang nagsu-supply ng mga music videos.

If we had it our way, hindi natin makikita ito!

Pag nakita mo ito sa isang video page natin, patay! Ibig sabihin po nito, tinanggal ang video sa YouTube, at wala pang nag-upload ng panibagong copya ng video. Every Sunday, chine-check po natin kung may bagong nag-upload ng panibagong copya, pero madalas ay mahirap makahanap ng replacement.

Swerte talaga kung nakita mo naman ito!

Yehey! Ibig sabihin, na recently tinanggal ang video sa YouTube, pero may bayaning nag-upload ng panibagong video, kaya na-update natin ang link, at mae-enjoy natin ulit ang video. Ibig rin sabihin nito, ay malakas ka sa dasal!

Because the lifespan of our videos are so delicately limited, it is VERY IMPORTANT to SUBSCRIBE to the Nostalgia Manila Feed para lagi kayo updated pag may bago tayong video. And whenever we post a new video, whether it's a clip from any of our weekly favorites, or something we featured, eh enjoyin po ninyo ng husto! Panuurin ninyo ng paulit-ulit, hanggang literally magsawa kayo. Dahil hindi natin alam kung kailan ito kukunin ng Bidyo Pulis Patrol ng YouTube.
