Together In Electric Dreams - Philip Oakey & Giorgio Moroder
"We'll always be together, together in electric dreams."

Electric Dreams is a 1984 movie set in San Francisco, California that depicts a love triangle between a man, a woman, and a home computer. It stars Lenny Von Dohlen, Virginia Madsen and Bud Cort (voice) and was directed by Steve Barron. The soundtrack features music from prominent popular musicians of the time, being among of the movies of this generation that actively explored the commercial link between a movie and its soundtrack. The VHS videotape conversion of this movie is rare. It was released in 1984 and again in 1991, but has not been manufactured since the mid-1990s. The movie's main theme here was a collaboration between Phil Oakey (known for Human League fame), and electronic music, synth wizard Giorgio Moroder.

I have a recent fascination with this song. I know it's from 20 years ago but I can relate to it, albeit in the present context of blogging and other social networking tools available in the Internet.

If I recall correctly, this song is about a guy being in love with some computer (which is a pretty inane premise really) but I love it anyway. =)

i saw the movie "together in electric dreams" back in high school, and i must say it was quite a cult classic. lenny von dohlen played a computer geek who had zero social skills, while virginia madsen was cast as a cellist who cared for little else except her music and her desire to enter into a prestigious music academy (probably juilliard).

anyway, one time lenny's character brought home a way-advanced computer that was able to develop human emotions after champagne was accidentally poured on it. eventually the computer began calling itself edgar (sorry guys if the only name i remembered was the computer's). living down the hall in lenny's apartment building is virginia madsen's character. so they meet, get to know each other and get over their initial awkwardness, and fall in love. problem is, edgar the computer also falls for virginia madsen's character (and who wouldn't--she's the reason why i must have watched the movie countless times!)

the thing about the movie is that it followed on the heels on the success of the movie "flashdance," which essentially was an experiment on extending the music video genre into a full-length format. it's not as flashy as flashdance, though, but it was a kilig classic nonetheless.

those were the days...

I actually own this soundtrack on cassette as I was (and still am) a massive Human League fan. I love the Heaven 17 track as well as the Culture Club track.
I saw the Human League in 1986 and they preformed this song.
