Remembering The Bataan Nuclear Power Plant


Dahil sa oil crisis ng 1973, ipinagawa ng pangulong Ferdinand Marcos ang Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP). Ito raw ang pinakamabuting solusyon na makakatulong sa pagtaas ng presyo ng langis. Nagsimula ang construction ng 620-megawatt plant noong 1976 at natapos noong 1984, sa halagang $2.3 billion. Ang planta ay nakatayo sa isang 357-hectare government reservation sa Napot Point, Morong town, Bataan province. Naging kontrobersyal ang halaga nito, dahil ang original na presyo ng planta ay $600 million. Tumaas ng husto ang presyo sa pangungurakot ng mga opsiyal ng gobyerno ng panahon. Dahil sa pangaabuso ng mga opisyales, ang BNPP ay naging malaking butas sa bulsa sa mga Filipino taxpayers, at maraming ang mga nag protesta sa mga demonstrasyon at anti-nuclear plant rallies.

Matapos ang Edsa Revolution at umupo bilang presidente is Corazon Aquino, hindi pinayagan ng kanyang administrasyon ang paggamit ng planta. Ayon sa mga test studies, nakumperma ang 4,000 defects ng planta. Ang BNPP ay isa sa sa mga proyektong sinimulan ng dating pangulong Marcos na hindi nagamit, pinerahan, at hanggang ngayon ay binabayaran pa rin ng gobyerno at mamamayang Pilipino.

Pure politics made sure it wouldn't run... And i don't know why we have to pay to maintain it if the Cory government sold the plutonium....
