Nostalgia List #01

A trip back in time. Tara na at sumakay tayo ng Time Machine! Here is our first Nostalgia List! Nostalgia Lists contain various fun memories of the '60s, '70s and '80s. Everyone is encouraged to participate and add to these growing lists. Send in your list items to nostalgiamanilamail[at]yahoo[dot]com, and those chosen will be added to the next list.

4. Before McDonalds meron nang Big 20 Hamburger.

6. UFO Burger ng Shakey’s, served on a plate na may red na plastic dome cover na mukhang UFO.

7. Feeding the fish sa likod ng Virramall.

9. Iron-On Station sa Unimart: Pipili ka ng T-shirt at pipili ka ng Iron-On na pinepress nila on the spot.

12. Gift Gate: Lego, Hello Kitty at Sanrio, Matchbox Cars at Stationery.

Pati mga olympic stand up toys often called Tautauhan.

16. Flying Tee: Simple plastic propeller + stick assembly na pinapalipad mo by sliding your palms.

17. UFO Space Helmet: Nabibili mo sa Greenhills o sa Divisoria. Comes with a set of stickers na circle with numbers printed on them na dinidikit mo sa harap, sa taas ng visor. May dalawang antenna on each side.

24. Ang unang Coke in cans hinihila mo yung tab para humiwalay sa can, pero minsan nakaka-sugat kayat dahan dahan mong iniinom.

27. Popular T-shirt designs na embossed at puffy: Star Rangers, Watari The Wonder Boy, Voltes V, Daimos, Superman, at Batman.

29. Pinag-susuot ka ng corduroy na pantalon.

“Pina asim!”

32. Curious ka sa lasa ng Lipovitan.

33. Paminsan-minsan may baon kang Yakult sa lunchbox mo.

46. Paramihan ng stickers, pencils, at erasers.

47. Paramihan ng Tex Cards! Sikat ang Zuma na Tex at comics.

48. Questor Magazine Book: Featuring Voltes V, Daimos, Mekanda Robot, Grendizer, Getta Robot, at Mazinger Z. Smooth hi-grade paper at napaka-gandang illustrations.

Please don't forget Magnolia Chocolait! They used to sell it in glass milk bottles and the cover they used was paper milk caps that you had to pull off.

Actually we do have a Magnolia Chocolait bottle featured in one of the first Nostalgia Treasure features. Check it out!

at my favorite... Grabe ang rivalry ng Crispa-Toyota of PBA.

Am someone born just at the dawn of the 70s and at first i was ashamed to contribute here because my memories were at least a decade older. Anyways, before memory slips into oblivion, here are some nostalgia from my part of the woods:

1. In 1973 when The Exorcist was shown in Bacolod City where I grew up, there were ambulances parked outside the cinemas ready to ferry shocked audiences to the hospital.

2. The first trading cards I collected were of the 1974 Miss Universe delegates which could be had from pabunots in sari-sari stores.

3. Images of President Nixon holding up the V sign and a quick salute before boarding the helicopter on his last day as US President. (I didn't know he resigned!)

4. Of the global political figures, I remembered as a child always reading and seeing pictures of Henry Kissinger, Golda Meir, and the Shah of Iran on the newspapers.

5. I was a Marcos baby and like everyone else was weaned on the New Society, Green Revolution, and Family Planning. Marcos to us then was a Godsend and we did not know who Ninoy Aquino was (especially us from the provinces).

6. The New Society propaganda had a jingle that blasted from almost everywhere - May bagong silang, may bago nang buhay. Bagong diwa, bagong bansa, sa bagong lipunan. Nagbabago ang lahat tungo sa pag unlad. At ating itanghal Bagong Lipunan! - ANd we were even made to sing this song at school flag ceremonies after the Panatang Makabayan!

7. Nora Aunor went to the US to film Lollipops & Roses. I did not know who Don Johnson was at the time and he seemed to me like a poor excuse for an actor. Of course Ate Guy could do no wrong!

8. This movie even had a sequel - Lollipops & Roses at Burong Talangka which tells about Nora's smuggling into the US this foul smelling local delicacy. Must make her wish right now that she smuggled this instead years later in real life!

9. MARGIE WINS! Thus bannered the Daily Express after Margarita Moran became the country's 2nd Miss Universe in July of 1973. She was crowned all the way from Athens Greece.

10. In Hollywood, disaster movies were the norm and the local papers blasted the pages with imaginative ads for The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake, and the Towering Inferno.

11. Movie themes were becoming regulars in the pop music arena starting from The Towering Inferno's "We May Never Love Like This Again", to A Star Is Born's "Evergreen" and the movie theme song of all time - The Way We Were.

12. I remembered coming out of the movie theater (State Cinema on Araneta Street in Bacolod City), doing the John Travolta jive-walkin' from Saturday Night Fever.

13. Pepsi was the king of on-pack premium bundling. I especially liked their soldier with a parachute which you throw high up in the air and squeal with delight as the parachute opens and the soldier glides back down towards you.

14. Bang-bang jeans, niknik shirts, yeye vonnel, jazzie shirts, and the ever popular Our Tribe!

15. The year 1977. The movie event of the century - Star Wars. And movie magic was never the same again!

16. The first time I was afraid to go into the water was due to another movie, Jaws, Steven Spielberg's debut, in 1975.

17. Local TV commercials were either hits or misses. Some of the hits: Gard Shampoo's Charlie Balakubak with Tito Valera saying the popular line "sana may Gard nung araw!"

18. Another hit was the Sunquick TV commercial with oranges cascading down an inclined plane. The jingle was very memorable - Sunquick over 20 glasses of Sunquick, that's a dose of real fruit juice, in every glass in every where... have a Sunquick today!"

19. And who can forget Rico J. Puno's Pepsi commercial with a bastardization of his song that went "Naglalakad pa sa Luneta, baby. Nang walang pera...."

20. Not to be outdone was Ate Guy's Coke commercial where she sang the globally famous "I'd like to buy the world a Coke and furnish it with love. Grow apple trees, honey bees and snow white turtle doves..."

Circa 1986-87 Sizzling Plate sa basement ng SM North Edsa, I remember my cousins and I could only afford the "Chuck Wagon" burger steak na 18 pesos lang at that time. Now almost 60 pesos na, hassle!

(From: Ryan Combat Camote) Haay, i really miss those moments! Thanks for this groovy site! Long Live Nostalgia Manila!!

- Pumupunta kayo with family sa PHILCITE sa may roxas boulevard para mamasyal and syempre mag-bike.

Okay itong site. Mabuhay!

3. Nutroplex - the orig lasa na katulad ngayon ng pinaghalong empe at ice tea..

4. Reprinted comics ng Marvel and DC. Presyo nito dati P1.70

5. Yung dating Rizal cinema sa Makati. Dun kami nakapanuod ng "heaven can wait".

8. Imitation jacket ni Michael Jackson either sa Beat It or sa Thriller.

Comes in red, blue, green, yellow.

Bala pa niya nuon, pacman at space invaders.

15. Palmolive shampoo - take note, hindi pa ito liquid, kundi yung POWDER form pa...

pag may maidagdag pa ako... =)

ang saya...

Speaking of shampoo, nakagamit ba kayo ng US SHAMPOO, GEE YOUR HAIR SMELLS TERRIFIC, PRELL SHAMPOO, AND HALO SHAMPOO?

'yung HAPPY FEET at OTAFOKU na slippers tapos ang suot mong t-shirt 'yung stripes na either pink and white or blue and white.

Feeling ko tuloy, bata na naman ako.

Hi Nostalgia Manila. You gotta great site! I have a question for you. I wonder what is that card game they played on Channel 7, the one that has German Moreno in it as host and it plays like a Super Trump game and these are big cards with pictures of robots on each of them.

And I think its just a small segment in Moreno's show. The contestants were all kids. I was a kid back then when I watched this but I just don't get it how it played.

As if Chn. 7 wants to create a robot craze franchise of their own during that time but it never caught on. Any idea what it is?

I will always remember Scribbler ballpen which I used in the 80s as a high school and college student. Know what? I still have one Scribbler inside my drawer--everytime I look at it it brings back those memories. See a picture of it here:

Hi! I'm looking for an old print ad for 'Gee your hair Smells Terrific' shampoo featuring a Filipina/mestiza. She was bending down pointing at something. She was wearing a white dress. It would come out in women's magazines around 1981 or 1982. Would really like to find it because the girl in that ad is now my wife and she no longer has a copy. =) Thanks!

Then later on tumapat ang A&W na may 12" foot long hotdog at sikat na sikat na root beer float.
