Cartoon Flashback: Remembering The Super 6

The Super 6 was an animated cartoon series which was produced by DePatie-Freleng Enterprises in 1966 and shown every Saturday morning during everyone's favorite cartoon marathon show Saturday Fun Machine on RPN 9 from the late '70s till about the early-to-mid '80s. The show starred an array of unforgettable superheroes under the supervision of the cheif dispatcher. The show consisted of three 5-6 minute shorts, and would open with a segment featuring Super Bwoing, and the latter featuring either one of the other five heroes or a segment featuring the three headed Brothers Matzoriley. You can watch a few Super 6 episodes here at Nostalgia Manila!

Cartoon Opening Plus Brothers Matzoriley Episode

THE SUPER 6 ARE:
Super Bwoing: Noted for his rather unremarkable physique, extreme clumsiness, and a rather odd pot-shaped red helmet with wings on it, echoing the helmet worn by the Graeco-Roman deity Mercury. His preferred mode of transportation was to fly through the air on his guitar, using the strings like reins on a horse. The guitar was equipped with a signal light which flashed an alert from the Super Service Headquarters when his services were required. His primary super-pwer was the ability to emit a super "lazer beam" from his eyes. When in attack mode he would call out "ZIP, ZAM, ZOWIE and SWOOSH". Due to his being the clumsiest of the Super Service heroes, he seemed to only get jobs if the others were busy or on holidays; in essence, the last choice and in any case better than nothing.

Granite Man: Composed of granite rock, and possessed the expected powers of near-invunerability, incredible strength and a powerful uppercut. When not working for the Super Service, Granite Man served a role as a statue in a local park. His assistant was Percival, a messenger pigeon who would wake him from his statue mode with the words "Oh rock of power, Awaken face, this dangerous hour".

Magneto Man: As the name implies, his powers were based on magnetism. He had blond hair, and wore a red suit with a magnet drawn on his chest. His assistant was a young sidekick named "Cal", and in addition to being the brains of the pair, also gave kids at home some minor educational tidbits in science. Both heroes were from London, and had exaggerated British accents; Magneto Man's accent was virtually identical to that of actor Cary Grant.

Elevator Man: Ironically the shortest of the Six, he wore a grey safari suit and a large belt. By pressing one of two buttons on the buckle, he could shrink into the size of an ant or grow into a giant. Other than his size-changing powers, no other special abilites were ever shown.

Super Scuba: An ocean-based hero, Super Scuba wore green SCUBA gear and lived in an underwater cave with his secretary "Bubbles" the mermaid. Bubbles was infatuated with Super Scuba, and would also accompany Scuba on his missions. Despite being relaxed, over-confident and self-centred, he managed to use his brains and wits to defeat his opponents.

Captain Whammo/Zammo: This hero was usually dispatched to fight villains of a more military nature. Oddly, his uniform - a peaked military officers cap, which looked more like a witches hat, pointy shoes and dark sunglasses - appeared anything other than military. His powers included flight and incredible strength, and used the catchphrase of "Tither, Yonder and Away" as he lept to the skies. The Captain also had the power to travel back in time to various historical events as part of his assignments, in which he was also assisted by Private Hammo. Private Hammo was fiercely loyal to the Captain, usually jumping in front of him to protect him from danger. Whammo would then usually award the carbonized Private with a medal, only to immediately confiscate it "For having a dirty uniform".

Trivia: The series had a catchy title song performed by 60's pop-star Gary Lewis, son of comedian Jerry Lewis.

Nostalgia Manila Presents: Our Big Bagets Special!

Bagets!
The term Bagets was coined by William Martinez and Alona Alegre who came up with the idea of the movie.

William Martinez, as star of Regal Films, offered the script to Regal producer Lily Y. Monteverde (Mother Lily). The Regal producer, however, rejected the idea saying it would not make money. They offered the story to Vic del Rosario Jr., owner of the rival Viva Films. Del Rosario's condition: William Martinez, a contract star of the rival Regal, should be in the movie. William agreed.

William Martinez (Tonton) is the most senior among the main cast. He was already passed his teen years. Bagets means teener. Also starring: Herbert Bautista (Gilbert), J.C. Bonnin (Topee), Raymond Lauchengco (Arnel), Aga Muhlach (Adie), Jobelle Salvador (Melissa), Eula Valdez (Janice), Yayo Aguila (Rose), Baby Delgado (Ivy), & Chanda Romero (Christine).

Performed and recorded by: Joe Boxers

Your technique it leaves me weak
My heart knows it's the beat I seek
And I found it (just got lucky)
And I found it (just got lucky)

I never worry that your love is fake
I'm feeling easy and I'm feeling jake
Cause I found it (just got lucky)
Oh boy I found it (just got lucky)
Cos I never felt this way before
Like a dog always begging for more

I've been fooled by love so many times
I gave up on all those silly rhymes
Kept my feelings all inside my heart
A locked door, no key was cut, that was to fit
Now I'm such a very lucky guy
Gang way, one side now, come on hear me say
Come on hear me say

We've got the answer and it's plain to see
That I'm for you and you're for me
Cause I found it (just got lucky)
Together we've found it (just got lucky)

I feel a quiver every time we kiss
The sky's the limit with a love like this
Cos I found it (just got lucky)
Together we found it (just got lucky)
Cos I never felt this way before
Like a dog always begging for more

I've been fooled by love so many times
I gave up on all those silly rhymes
Kept my feelings all inside my heart
A locked door, no key was cut, that was to fit
Now I'm such a very lucky guy
Gang way, one side now, come on hear me say
Come on hear me say
Just got Lucky
Just got Lucky

Your technique it leaves me weak
My heart knows it's the beat I seek
Yeah I found it (just got lucky)
Oh Boy I found it (just got lucky)
Cos I never felt this way before

Big Bagets Special: Paano ba maging Bagets?

By: Jojo Devera, of Sari-Saring Sineng Pinoy

Dulang Pampelikula: Jake Tordesillas
Sinematograpiya: Jose Batac, Jr.
Musika: Ricky del Rosario
Editing: Edgardo Vinarao
Disenyong Pamproduksiyon: Butch Garcia
Prodyuser: Viva Films

Nicholas Stoodley - Living in the Twilight Zone Chapter 3

Tune in every Saturday as Nicholas recalls the Disco Decade in Manila when Martial Law, Cuban heels, Donna Summer, Coco Banana and a lot of hair combined in a frenzy of uncertain excitement.

Chapter 3 - Playboy Magazine

How in God's name did I end up sitting at a desk in a house in Scout Magbanua designing (or attempting to design) clothes in a country so far from home a country most people couldn't even find on the map! Turgid gray clouds were obscuring the sun (and my mind) and an extremely odd maid outside was attempting lunch that was even odder. Food certainly was, how shall I say, VERY experimental in those days. Being English I had informed Elving, my maid, that rice was all good and well but NON STOP rice? Could she cook potatoes? She had duly asked around and discovered exactly what a potato was (obviously a rare and exotic delicacy in those days) but unfortunately neglected to find out how one cooked this particular vegetable. They arrived, small hard bullets lurking at the bottom of a bowl of dark, yellowish brown liquid in which was suspended a few lumps of what could only be described as disgusting. Ah pork! I was told. Unfortunately the poor pig hadn't shaved well before it met its maker and therefore a number of bristles protruded from the flesh. So much for lunch! So much for being a superstar from Rome . It wasn't a good day.

I hadn't even intended to work for Valentino and yet it was this fact that had so entranced my financial backers in the first place. I MUST be good if I'd been his assistant. So ran the logic. My original plan though had been to get into movies. Sitting under a tree in Hyde Park in London and feeling very strongly that my life needed a bit of excitement, I had asked myself what would I like to do if I had a free wish? Anything in the world! So I decided I wanted to be a Film Director. Simple really well it WAS a wish. The best way, I had thought, was to start as an assistant to a successful, well known Director and I'd take it from there.

I placed an advertisement in the Times newspaper that read FRANCO ZEFIRELLI PLEASE CONTACT NICHOLAS IN LONDON URGENT. With the callowness of youth combined with an over-optimistic personality, I fully expected him to contact me and he did. A few days later, I got a letter telling me to call a number in Rome. I spoke to a nice Jewish girl from Brooklyn who informed me that "Franco don't know any Nicholas in London ." I had laughed and explained and she had laughed and that was that. Simple. The next day I was in Rome getting drunk with her. It wasn't to be though. There were too many Americans saturating the Italian Film Industry at that time and work permits were impossible to get. The only possibility was for me to work in an allied field, say design, and then transfer to film after a year or so.

Perpetuating this fairy story, (for this is how it sounds) I just happened to know someone who worked for Valentino so I applied for a job. I recall clearly the first time Valentino himself saw me, his head peering almost shyly round the corner of his office . Mmmm, Nice English boy but dresses like shit! he had thought. There was no mistaking THAT look. Can I design a chair? I had been asked. Why not I had replied, honest enough to mention that this was something I had never contemplated before and surprisingly this answer was enough to get me the job.

Obviously Valentino had wanted a fresh new approach infused into his line of Home D cor and he certainly got it, resulting in my being summoned to his office to explain the front cover of Playboy Magazine. Two scantily clad nymphets posing with a chair. It was MY chair. I was proud! It was though HIS chair. A Valentino chair! I had designed what looked amazingly like a phallic symbol. It had been entirely sub conscious on my part but there, with two nearly naked girls well, let's just say it wasn't very Valentino!

Thousands of miles away from Rome I was still struggling with an empty sheet of paper, a dull mind and a bad stomach. What price an adventurous spirit?

Previously: Chapter 2 - Cold Turkey!

Start from the beginning! Read: Chapter 1 - An English Virgin

Nicholas Stoodley was born near London and has lived at one time or another in the South of France, Rome, Sydney, Tagaytay, England, Paris and Manila with plans to move to Ibiza shortly. A former assistant to Valentino in Rome, he arrived in Manila in 1976 and pioneered Ready to Wear in the Philippines with the NICHOLAS STOODLEY brand of casual clothing. During his stay in the Philippines Nicholas also won the PBA Invitational Basketball Conference in 1980 with his team from Los Angeles, designed and manufactured a Stainless Steel Sports Utility Jeep that was featured in the Frankfurt Motor Show and opened "Skatetown", a Roller Disco with Jorge Araneta in Cubao. And that was just the first course!
